How did LEAP decide on their logo?

LEAP's logo was decided by a planning committee on September 8, 1997.  The palm tree represents "LIFE...as a person is growing" and the sun represents "HEALING" and "GROWTH."

How & When did LEAP begin?

LEAP programming began in September 1995 with a pilot group of 12 consumers.  Paul Dickey, at that time Director of Crawford County MH/MR, contracted a special educator, Debbie Fisher, to work with a facilitator from Women's Services, at that time Gay Taylor, to work with consumers who had documented histories of abuse.  At the end of that first year, consumers no longer wanted to focus on violence and abuse, but did want to continue the group learning experiences.  Thus, per consumers' input to the county, LEAP programming has continued to grow!

Since LEAP support that first year, it is participants' comments and requests that drive LEAP programming to continue.  It was in program year 2000-2001 that we approached David Crowe, Director of Crawford County Human Services, about needing a consistent meeting site.  With Dave's nod, we moved ahead with plans.  Beginning July 1, 2001, LEAP became a non-profit, 501(c)3 service provider agency endorsed through Crawford County Human Services.

What does LEAP stand for?

 Life Enrichment & Achievement Progress

The L.E.A.P. acronym was the brainstorm of Bob Merlin in September 1995.  Bob was a case manager through Crawford Care Management, and participated in the initial planning stages for the 1st year pilot project.

What kind of program is LEAP?

LEAP supports LIFE SKILLS PROGRESS and COMMUNITY INTEGRATION support services for adults with Developmental Disabilities and/or Mental Health challenges.  Individuals active with LEAP are the primary influence in the scheduling of workshops, meetings, and special events.  LEAP programming occurs at various times during the weekdays, evenings and weekends.

How does someone become active with LEAP's services?

  • REFERRAL:  An individual may be referred for LEAP support through their Crawford County MR Supports Coordintor or MH Administrative Case Manager.
  • INTAKE:  Once LEAP receives a referral, individual attends an intake meeting with LEAP staff to review what LEAP support means and to make a plan with outcome-based goals for LEAP support.
  • Individual LEAP Plan:  Each individual who agrees to be ACTIVE with LEAP states personal areas of interest for making life skills progress.  When an individual signs their annual LEAP Plan, he/she receives their first monthly LEAP calendar.  Also, an individual binder is assigned for noting progress on their outcome-based goal(s), tracking earned progress credits, and logging monthly hours of program service use.

Why does LEAP have an ADVISORY BOARD?

The purpose of LEAP's Advisory Board is to advise LEAP's Director and Board of Directors about what is working, as well as what needs to be changed in programming.  Individuals who have been active with LEAP for at least a year may pursue a seat on the Advisory Board by:

  1. attending 3 monthly meetings in a row
  2. during their 3rd attendance, presentation to peer Advisory Board members about how they feel their participation would benefit the program, then
  3. be voted in by active peer Advisory Board members.

Members of LEAP's Advisory Board participate actively in LEAP support services, follow Advisory Board BY-LAWS, attend monthly Advisory Board sessions and scheduled Board meetings, and lead by example!
